Case study: crazy about composting
Primary school children in Exmouth have started a food composting project
Aims
Primary aim:
Install at least 2 food composters around the school and create compost patch by Christmas
Secondary aim:
100% of organic food waste recycled and all compost created used in school garden
Tasks
Help from friends
- Eco Council to find out how much composters cost
- Have competition to design the best poster about food recycling
- Get class 5 to put up posters around school about recycling food
- Work out how often composters will be emptied and who is in charge of this. Draw up rota so that everyone shares responsibility
Help from adults
- Find out from our Eco Council organiser how we could raise funds for composters
- Discuss with Eco Council, Head Teacher and Governors whether school can give some money
- Find out from Head Teacher and Caretaker where in school composters can be put
- Decide with Head Teacher and Caretaker where a compost patch can be put in school grounds
- Help from Eco Council organiser to draw up rota for compost emptying
Press coverage
Invite the local gazette to the school to take photos of the project
Special guest
Invite Devon Global Action to talk to pupils in school council
Permission
- Permission from Head Teacher to put some composters into the school
- Caretaker’s permission for a compost patch in school garden
- Permission from Head Teacher or Deputy Head to contact Press for coverage and to invite in Devon Global Action
